Description

A slight departure from the norm, a collection of inspirations as model railways, indulgently photographed to highlight the atmosphere and themes that their builders sought to explore and invoke when they dreamed up their ideas. Alongside the striking images are words from each creator, describing their ideas and how they brought them to life in three dimensions.

In creating this collection, James was moved by the childhood inspiration he got from the wonderful annuals that magazines used to produce. Not least the 'Model Railway Journal Compendium', from which the 'Bucolic Silo' directly leads to one of James own schemes 'Paxton Road' in this first 'Companion'.

Whilst featuring a number of James' schemes as mentioned above, the book also features a number of striking and imaginative layouts from modellers in North America and Europe, including recent work by Lance Mindheim, and Floris Dilz's immersive and insanely ambitious recreation of a declining steelworks. Dubious Paris suburbs, down at heel London (based in Provence), misty Welsh slate magic, Canadian woodchips, Aberdonian atmosphere, Scottish 37s and more besides.
